Monster Tires, Nimble Ride. 18lbs 5oz
The OPEN U.P. inspired a generation of gravel bikes that could fit up to 2.1” tires. The WI.DE. (Winding Detours) can run even bigger tires while still fitting road cranks!
The monster tires help you conquer the most extreme terrain, the performance geometry & narrow Q-factor keep you efficient while the steering geometry keeps you nimble.
- With 650b gravel or mountain bike tires up to 2.4”(61mm), rutted singletrack, slippery roots and loose rocks are no match
- With 700c gravel tires up to 46mm, even the toughest gravel roads are tackled at lightning speed
- With 700c road tires (we recommend 35-40mm wide), you have the most comfortable road bike ever invented
DOUBLE-DROP CHAINSTAY
The U.P.’s dropped chainstay has become our most copied frame feature ever. No wonder, as it is a great way to create more tire clearance.
The WI.DE. goes one better. By dropping both chainstays, the monostay just behind the bottom bracket becomes a very efficient box structure. This increases BB stiffness, reduces weight and squeezes even more tire clearance out of the frame.
Finding ways to fit the biggest possible tire into a bike with road geometry and road cranks is one of our specialties. The WI.DE. does this thanks to the double-drop chainstays mentioned above and a dedicated 1x frame design. Since most of our customers run 1x drivetrains, we can use the inner chainring space to move the chainstay outward and increase tire clearance.
As a result, the WI.DE. comfortably accepts up to 2.4” (61mm) tires in 650b (or 46mm on 700c wheels). Actual tire width depends on tire model and rim width, so measure instead of relying on the tire label.
SPEED & HANDLING
Most riders know that with the right bike geometry, even big tires can be fast. The WI.DE. takes this to the extreme. Of course a massive tire is not as fast as a pure road tire, but the delta is small enough that it doesn’t detract from the on-road fun. And off-road, there is no comparison.
Equally important is the handling as we have a reputation to protect (check out the media reviews about the U.P. handling).
The WI.DE. retains its agility with anything from massive mountain tires to road tires.
TRCinTRS™ TECHNOLOGY
Forget “100% hi-modulus aero-space carbon”. It’s not about high- or low-modulus, it’s about the right carbon in the right spot (or TRCinTRS™ as we mockingly call it).
Fact: stiffer carbon is more brittle. So it's great for stiffness (on the sides of the downtube) but bad for impact loads (for example around the headtube).
Hence the best lay-up is a blend. We strategically place the ultra-high modulus (very stiff) carbon where we can, and tougher grades of carbon where we must. That’s how our frames are both light and durable.
U-TURN
Our U-Turn fork has always had massive tire clearance, making it the perfect match for the WI.DE. It’s also very light, thanks to another OPEN innovation: Smartmount.
Smartmount attaches the caliper directly onto the fork, without any adaptors. The mounts are positioned pre-set for 160mm discs (the only sensible choice for gravel bikes). Lighter, cleaner, stiffer and safer. Check the specifications for more details on how to mount each brand of caliper.
“STUFF CARRYING CAPABILITY”
As your Wide Detours get wider, you want to take more stuff but without it getting unwieldy. So you can mount an extra bottle under the downtube and a toolbox under the BB, ideal for stability.
The tool box mounts are off-center to create extra clearance to the chainring. If you don’t use a toolbox, you can mount a larger water bottle under the downtube.
The WI.DE. is also designed to take a (strapless) toptube bag as well as saddle, handlebar and frame bags for longer high-speed adventures.
We have selected the Campagnolo Ekar Groupset for weight and simplicity. 13-speed. The simplicity of a 1x drivetrain has many advantages for gravel, including less chance of chain drop and no muck clogging up the front derailleur. With 1x11, some felt the steps between gears were a little too big. With 1x12 from SRAM, that rarely gets mentioned anymore. With this 1x13, the issue is completely solved. 38T chainring with a 9-42t in the back.
Nominal expense on the cockpit or seat area. Whisky bar (42cm) Ritchey Stem (90mm) and Easton Seat Post (450mm Zero Off Set) have been used. The Fizik Antares is sure to provide lasting comfort. You can not go wrong.
The wheels are Enve G23 (1305g).
Beyond the range of your trail bike and the capabilities of your road bike there is terrain littered with a contradicting challenge—mountain bike toughness and road machine efficiency. It requires a wheel with the ride quality to make long days on the road invigorating and inspire absolute confidence everywhere else. Enter the G23.
LIGHTNESS AND WIDTH
We set out to create a wheel that would maximize speed, fun and reliability while riding out-there terrain. At only 330 grams, the G23 is the lightest 700c tubeless rim ENVE produces. This makes for instant acceleration and endless ascending capability. The wide and shallow rim geometry gives a compliant ride quality over chatter, and allows for use with a wide range of tire sizes. Big tires = big grip, which gives the G23 confidence-inspiring descending capability over its road-oriented siblings.
TIRE SAVING TECH
With an inner rim width of 23mm, the G23 is designed to be paired with gravel treads between 35 and 45mm. Tires in these widths provide control and traction that optimize the experience of gravel riding endeavors. Many tires in this spec however do not offer much by way of pinch-flat protection. The forward-looking G23 uses our Wide Hookless Bead anti-flat technology to combat ride-ending pothole encounters. Wide beads provide a larger, more forgiving surface during bottom outs, protecting the tire from the dreaded pinch-flat. This technology means you can ride the tire pressures you want, confidently, without limitations.
TUBELESS DOMINANCE
G series wheels are intended for tubeless applications and feature a molded bead-lock to ensure that your tires will remain secure and sealed to the rim over even the roughest terrain. Despite ‘minimum PSI’ markings to the contrary, many riders are experimenting with pressure setting in the 20s, thanks to the bead-lock and Wide Hookless Bead technologies.
Simply put, the G23 exceeds the performance and ride quality demands of serious mixed surface cyclists. Armed against pinch flats, with a tough, relentless but refined character, it is the king of the road, path and trail.
The wheels are taped and ready for your favorite sealant. We have paired this setup with a set of 700x38 Panaracer Gravel King Ext+. The emphasis is on performance. This is the reason the bike has a great wheel on it.
We have rounded out this build with Zipp Cx Bar Tape. Silicone backed, this tape provides superior grip and cushion.
