Vision for a Connected Main Line

The Main Line Greenway

What Is The Main Line Greenway?

The Main Line Greenway is a proposed bike path that would connect West Laurel Hill Cemetery and Arboretum to Stoneleigh Gardens. This project is about more than bike lanes. The Main Line Greenway is a vision for a healthier, more connected, and sustainable Main Line.

Who Started The Main Line Greenway?

Local cycling groups such as The The Bicycle Coalition of Greater Philadelphia (includes Bike Montgomery County, Bike Delaware County),  Narberth Cycling Club, & unaffiliated advocates for safer streets on The Main Line.

In 2018, Leonard Bonarek, Regional Planner of the Bicycle Coalition, Kimberley Bezak, Co-head of the Narberth Cycling Club, and others met to brainstorm a low-stress route to connect Narberth to The Circuit Trail Network.

Next, the group organized a community meeting which was attended by Narberth and Lower Merion Residents. This was the pilot of Bicycle Coalition of Greater Philadelphia’s TASCC program: Technical Assistance to Suburban Circuit Communities.  The main goal of TASCC is to get more communities safely connected to Circuit trails – a network of bicycle and pedestrian trails connecting the Greater Philadelphia region.

Examples of Greenways

These are some existing examples of greenways similar to The Main Line Greenway's vision.

Why Does The Main Line Need a Greenway?

The Main Line is already full of cyclists! Group rides, bicycle commuters, and athletes all share our roads with vehicles. The Main Line Greenway would give these road users a safe place to enjoy our beautiful region.

Also, Bike lanes are proven to benefit local businesses. ( Source 1, Source 2, Source 3)

How Will The Main Line Greenway Be Built?

The Main Line Greenway is testing a route that utilizes existing infrastructure and paths to connect our communities. Exploratory group rides have already taken place to explore "pinch points" along the route. With additional signage and in some places, road striping, The Main Line Greenway's proposed design compliments The Main Line's current style of transportation.

5. Attend this planning meeting!

"Next Wednesday, November 20th at 7:30 PM, the Board of Commissioners will discuss whether to include pedestrian and cycling safety improvements along East Levering Mill Road (Conshohocken State Road to Belmont Avenue) in Lower Merion’s 2020-2025 Capital Improvement Plan.

Friends, this is NOT A DONE DEAL! We have our three local commissioners behind us, but we will need to win over at least five more from outside Bala Cynwyd to get this approved.

We need a strong contingent to ATTEND THE MEETING and stand in support of the funding!

If you can make it, please DM or email us at so we can plan to sit together." - Bala Walks
