Is This The First Smart Trainer Ever Made?

We took a deep dive into The Smithsonian Collection's scanned issues of "The Wheel". Scrolling through any random section of the document is very interesting but we stopped at this illustration of a cyclist on an 1888 "Smart Trainer".



Affixed to the cyclist's head is an imagined wearable "Cinematograph". Below is cinematography of The Great Pyramids taken in 1897. This illustration appeared in an 1888 issue of "The Wheel" so perhaps cyclists would have imagined watching something like this:
 

Did you notice the fan? 

It seems that the cyclist's desire to recreate the open road indoors is as old as the bicycle itself.
